Robert Kohen is the owner of Kohen Educational Services, a test prep firm that provides personalized SAT and ACT tutoring to students in New York City and online. He also publishes The SAT/ACT Blog, a popular online source for SAT and ACT lessons, strategies and advice. Robert holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University and earned his B.A., summa cum laude, from Columbia University.

Abdisamad Adan grew up in Hargeisa, the capital city of Somaliland (an autonomous region of Somalia). He just began his first year at Harvard University. In this episode, he shares what it was like to apply from Somaliland.

He went to a public primary school in Hargeisa and later attended Abaarso School of Science and Technology for secondary education.

While a junior at Abaarso School, he received a scholarship from ASSIST, an organization that gives international students one year opportunity to attend an independent college preparatory high school in the US. Abdisamad completed his high school education at the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York.

This past year, he worked as the Executive Assistant of Abaarso School of Science and Technology while applying to colleges.

Kim Lifton is president and co-founder of Wow Writing Workshop. A graduate of Michigan State University’s School of Journalism, Kim is a former daily news reporter and communications consultant. Kim speaks regularly to students, parents and educational professionals throughout the U.S.

In October, she moderated a panel discussion on the college essay (featuring the directors of admissions from Cornell and UC-Berkeley) at the National Association for College Admissions Counseling’s annual meeting in San Diego.

He’s been a serial entrepreneur since he left a senior strategy position at a Fortune 1000 company to enter a then-nascent home computer market.

"Acceptance" is a 50-minute international film based on the true story about a scholar from India who lies about getting into Harvard.

Ryan Matthew Chan is an American filmmaker of Eurasian descent born and raised in Singapore. He graduated from Yale University in 2015 with a double major in Film Studies and Economics. In 2011, Chan served as the Director of Photography for an independent feature film called "The Durian King" starring renowned Singaporean actor Lim Kay Tong. In 2010, Chan developed the screenplay for Acceptance with co-writer Vishnu Hari and began production in the Summer of 2012 with sponsorship from the Media Development Authority of Singapore. Chan drew most of his inspiration for "Acceptance" from his upbringing at the Singapore American School. "Acceptance" had its international premiere at the 2014 New York Indian Film Festival.

Vishnu Hari is a Canadian screenwriter of Indian descent raised in Singapore who graduated from Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) where he received the Lee Suan Yew Speaker of the Year award. He received his degree in Astrophysics and Economics from the University of Toronto in 2015. Hari developed an interest in filmmaking when he met Chan at a Model UN Conference in 2009 where the two bonded over their passion for cinema. Hari acted in and co-wrote several of Chan’s short films during their final year of high school. Hari's love for writing comes from observing his father who is a published novelist.

Shelley Enger assists STEM-focused students with their college applications, and she developed courses that she teaches to highly motivated high school students about the process of research science. She is also a seasonal Freshman Application Reader for UC Berkeley.

Her interest in working with STEM students derives from her background as a research scientist. Shelley graduated from UC Berkeley with a major in Microbiology & Immunology, and then worked as a lab technician in a research lab for 3 years. She returned to school to earn a master’s degree and Ph.D. in Epidemiology at UCLA, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the USC Keck School of Medicine. She conducted cancer epidemiology research for nearly ten years at Kaiser Permanente, before becoming a research consultant for a start-up medical device company, work she continues to this day.

Milyon Trulove is the Reed College Vice President and Dean of Admission and Financial Aid. He came to Reed in August of 2014 from Hamline University in Minnesota, where he was dean of admission and financial aid. Prior to that, he worked for 10 years in admission at St. Olaf College, his alma mater. He also led the development of local, regional, and international recruitment and communications for the full-time MBA program at the Opus College of Business at the University of St. Thomas, where he received a master’s degree in higher education leadership.

Kevin Martin graduated Phi Beta Kappa with Highest Honors from the University of Texas at Austin in 2011. The recipient of over thirty honors, scholarships, and recognitions, the first-generation college student earned a Bachelor of Arts in Government, History, and the Humanities Honors Program. His research in conflict and genocide took him abroad to Scotland, Bosnia, and Rwanda culminating in a peer-reviewed publication.

He worked in UT admissions for two and a half years before completing a Fulbright grant in Malaysia and founding his own admissions company, Tex Admissions.

Mark Greenstein has taught test prep since 1987 and has been a speaker on college admissions, vouchers, choice in schools, and education reform. He is the publisher of the Rising Stars’ Heart of Darkness, an annotated version of Conrad’s novel, designed for SAT Prep. He has taught LSAT prep to over 1000 students, and SAT prep to over 800. Mark is especially passionate about discussing testing and admissions issues.

Ruth Vedvik, co-author of The Financial Aid Handbook, has worked in College and University admission for 39 years - 26 years as a practicing enrollment professional at six colleges and universities both private and public, highly selective and less selective and single sex. She was the chief admission officer at three of the six schools.

She became a principal with Hardwick~Day, an enrollment consulting firm, in 2002 working with colleges and universities across the country.

In 2012, she and Carol Stack wrote The Financial Aid Handbook to help families understand how schools award grants and scholarships so that students can find the best colleges they can afford.

JD Rothman (aka Judy Rothman Rofé), a former instructor of remedial freshman composition, is an Emmy-winning children's television writer, producer and lyricist. While on an eight-state college tour with her older son she started the www.theNeuroticParent.com blog, a satirical look at the insanity of today’s college admissions process. The blog, a favorite of exhausted admissions officers and stressed-out parents, was excerpted in I'm Going to College, Not You and eventually morphed into the LA Times bestseller, The Neurotic Parent’s Guide to College Admissions, which has recently been optioned by a top film producer.

Rothman grew up in Brooklyn, and resided in several Latin American countries before settling in Santa Monica, where she and her husband, a bassist in the Los Angeles Philharmonic, live with their schnoodle, waiting for infrequent texts from their two sons.
